Your Google Traffic Is Dropping—And It Might Not Be (Entirely) Your Fault

The Real Culprit Might Be an AI, Not an Algorithm Update

You know the drill. Traffic drops, you open Google Search Console, check your rankings—still stable, sometimes even better than before—and yet, clicks are plummeting. The classic reflex is to blame yet another 'algorithm update' and wait for it to blow over. There's another explanation, increasingly common, and much harder to spot in a typical dashboard: AI Overviews.

Since their large-scale rollout, AI-generated summaries at the top of Google results directly answer a growing share of questions—without any click needed. Your page can remain #1, perfectly ranked organically... and only get a fraction of the traffic it would have had two years ago, because the answer was already up there, above, before the user even needed to scroll.

Zero-Click: A Phenomenon That's Been Around

It's not entirely new: featured snippets have been nibbling away at clicks for years on simple informational queries ('what time is it in Tokyo', that sort of thing). What changes with AI Overviews is the scale: the generative summary can now answer much more complex and nuanced questions, including some with commercial intent—exactly the type of queries your qualified traffic lived on.

How to Tell If This Is Really It

A few signals point to this explanation rather than a classic content issue: your rankings remain stable or improve while CTR (click-through rate) drops on the same queries; the drop mainly affects informational or semi-commercial queries ('what is', 'how', 'what's the difference between') rather than highly transactional ones; and—the most direct sign—you see, when typing these queries yourself, that an AI Overview now appears above your results when it wasn't there a few months ago.

The Bad News and the Good News

The bad news: this isn't a temporary bug that will resolve on its own. The trend is structural, driven by Google itself, and it's likely to intensify rather than recede.

The good news: being cited IN the AI Overview (or in a conversational AI response) is still possible, and captures a different but real form of visibility—a direct recommendation, without visual competition from nine other blue links. The game hasn't disappeared; it's just changed playing field.

What This Means in Practice

Classic organic traffic remains a useful signal, but it becomes a partial measure of your real visibility. A brand can very well see its Google traffic stagnate while gaining in AI visibility—and vice versa. Hence the value of tracking both in parallel rather than steering your acquisition strategy with a single metric that's become incomplete.

Which queries are most affected

All queries are not equal in the face of AI Overviews. Simple informational questions ("what is", "how to") are the first affected, since a short, factual answer lends itself particularly well to a generated summary. Very transactional queries ("buy [product] cheap") are for the moment more spared—the user often wants to land on a real page to finalize a purchase, not read a summary. In between, semi-commercial queries ("what is the best", "comparison of") are the most contested zone, and where GEO makes the biggest difference.

A ballpark figure, to give you an idea

For certain categories of informational queries, independent studies have measured organic CTR drops of 15 to 30% after an AI Overview appeared on the same query—the position remains the same, but a significant portion of clicks simply no longer happen. The exact numbers vary greatly by industry and query type, but the direction is clear and won't reverse.

What to do in practice

Stop relying solely on organic traffic

Add an AI visibility metric alongside your usual SEO metrics. Stable traffic with declining AI visibility is an early warning signal that Google Search Console will never show directly.

Prioritize content that answers a real question

Pages that precisely and clearly answer a question are more likely to be the source of an AI Overview—thus being cited, even without a direct click, which remains a form of visibility and brand building.

Don't neglect channels that don't depend on Google

Email, community, social networks, word-of-mouth: channels that become mechanically more valuable as traditional organic search captures a decreasing share of available attention.

Change the Thermometer, Not the Patient

If your traffic is dropping for no apparent reason in your content or rankings, the AI angle is worth checking before diving into a weeks-long traditional SEO audit. And if it is indeed the cause, the answer isn't to abandon SEO—it's to add to your dashboard the metric that actually captures what happens once Google answers on behalf of the user.
